Staff at the Gold Reef City casino in Johannesburg
are in trauma counselling after eight robbers stormed
the premises early on Wednesday, a spokesperson said.
"In this situation one has to keep very cool," said
casino marketing manager Claudia Crooney.
She confirmed that the incident had taken place but said
the eight men had not made off with any cash, even
though they pushed a heavy cash trolley to a getaway
bakkie.
"There was no cash inside it," Crooney said.
Crooney confirmed that armed response personnel were
involved in a shoot-out with the robbers, as they fled
the casino.
"Two of the guards were injured."
At 7.30am, she said casino management was working with
police at the scene.
Asked if it might have been an inside job, Crooney said:
"We are not going to go there."
Police spokesperson Sergeant Sanku Tsunke confirmed the
attempted robbery. - Sapa
